By E. L. Bynum
This article is taken from a sermon preached by Pastor Bynum Feb. 14, 2004, from Jude 17-23. It will be best understood, if the reader will turn to Jude and keep their Bible open.
We’re reeling under an epidemic of thirty sexually transmitted diseases, with devastating new microorganisms showing up every few years. Cervical cancer in young women has soared to unprecedented rates. An AIDS epidemic literally threatens the entire human family and twenty million Americans are afflicted with genital herpes. They can expect to suffer from it for the rest of their lives. Obscene publications and films have become so offensive that uninitiated viewers often become nauseated when seeing them. Millions of girls are having babies before they’re out of childhood. One and a half million abortions are occurring every year in the United States alone. And most importantly, the family has been deeply wounded — and may never recover.
Our nation is sinking into sin and apostasy so fast that most people have not noticed how severe the problem really is. We are living in the last days and the majority of Christians are acting like every thing is okay. Many do not want to wake up and will resist with all their might any effort to arouse them.
We are told that if we expose error and false doctrine and teachers that we have no love. Jude must not have known about this. This little book abounds with exposure of false teachers and doctrines. It is next to the last book of the Bible. I believe that I will just stand with Jude and not the new doctrine of a love that is devoid of the truth. It is with this in mind that I bring this message entitled, “How Then Shall We Live?”
“But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” (Jude 1:17-23)
I. Remember What Jude Said. Jude 3-16
If we are going to be faithful to God we must “earnestly contend for the faith.” (v. 3). The faith was once delivered to the saints and we dare not depart from it, and if necessary contend for it.
Jude tells us of God’s condemnation of the ungodly. (4-7). The ungodly people described as “certain men” crept in unawares. (v. 4). They turn the grace of God into lasciviousness which means that they are given over to unbridled lust. This explains the lust and immorality in some religions that claim to be Christian. Yes, it also creeps into sound churches if we let our guard down. Of course they end up denying “the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Jude gives us the example of Israel being delivered out of Egypt, but God destroyed many of them in the wilderness, because of their unbelief. (v. 5). Even the angels that sinned could not escape, but are reserved for judgment. (v. 6)
God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, because of their homosexual practices. (v. 7) This should be an example to the U.S.A. which is deeply involved in homosexuality and the toleration of it. Our nation is headed for the judgment of God, because of this same sin. Our nation is a disgrace when we see what is taking place in San Francisco in the marriage of homosexuals. We had better wake up before it is too late.
He describes what these certain ungodly men do. (v. 8-16). They defile the flesh and speak evil of God. (v. 8-9). Our nation is almost being drowned by the sin and defilement that flows out of Hollywood, TV, and the Internet. The youth of today have no opportunity to grow up in innocence.
They speak evil of holy things and corrupt themselves. (v. 10) They reject the blood as did Cain and they practice religion for money as Balaam did. (v. 11). This results in dry and waterless lives that are fruitless. (v. 12).
In spite of the wicked, the Lord Jesus Christ is coming back as described by Enoch, and He is going to bring judgment upon and unbelieving world. (v. 13-15). They may seem to be flourishing today, but their day is coming.
He then exhorts to stand for the faith which was “once delivered to the saints” (v.3). Twice in verses 17 and 20, he refers to the saints as “beloved.” This is a term of endearment use frequently in the New Testament. The people he is addressing are dear to his heart and to the heart of God. With love in his heart he gives the exhortations necessary to keep from being misled by the ungodly. As ’beloved‘ we should heed these warnings as well.
II. Remember What the Apostles Said. (v. 17-18)
They are to remember who spoke the other warnings. They were the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, and what they wrote was inspired of God. They were appointed and sent out by Jesus Christ Himself. To heed them is to heed the Lord Himself. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.” (John 13:20)
We need to remember what they said. They reminded us that there would be scoffers in the last days. “That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” (2 Peter 3:2-4)
We are warned that these apostates would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” (2 Timothy 3:1-5) “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” (2 Tim. 4:3-4)
Any Christian should be able to read these verses just quoted, and see that this kind of man-made religion is upon us today.
III. Remember to Build Yourselves up in the Most Holy Faith. v. 20
To “build up” suggests growth. “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.” (Jude 20) It is not enough to just lay down one level of knowledge and understanding. We must continue to build upon it. “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18a)
We need to take advantage of our opportunities to study and learn more of God’s word.
To “build up yourselves” suggests personal responsibility. While God, family, and brethren will be there to encourage us, we must accept personal responsibility and make the effort ourselves.
“The most holy faith” is that “faith once delivered unto the Saints.” It is that body of doctrine in which our personal faith is to rest. It has been “once delivered unto the saints.” There are no new revelations from God. If men will not believe what God has already received, they would no accept a new revelation from God. It has been once delivered to us, and we will be held responsible as to whether we received and kept it. All of this pertains to what our Lord Jesus Christ has done and will do for us!
IV. Remember to Pray in the Holy Ghost. v. 20
Prayer is the Necessary Complement to the Word of God. By the Word of God, God speaks to us; and by prayer, we speak to God. The prayer meetings in most churches are nothing more than an exercise in futility. As we slide deeper and deeper into the apostasy of the last days, we had better learn to do our “praying in the Holy Ghost.”
The Word of God is a source of strength and comfort to us; but then, so also is prayer. In prayer we can reach the throne of God where the real power is. We can obtain the help and the reinforcements that we need for the battle. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:6-7) Without prayer we will never use the weapons of God for the battle, but will resort to the carnal weapons that God will not bless. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.” (2 Cor. 10:4)
We need to think of prayer and the Word of God as the “two legs” upon which our spiritual well-being stands; both are needed to be well-balanced in our spiritual growth.
What is meant by praying “in the Holy Ghost?” Jude does not explain it, and neither did Paul, but he uses the expression. “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” (Eph. 6:18)
Paul does use the expression “walk in the Spirit” in Gal. 5:25, which suggests walking or living according to the Spirit’s direction as found in the Word of God. “Praying in the Spirit” simply emphasizes that our prayers are in harmony with what the Spirit teaches in the Word of God.” And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us.” (1 John 5:14)
V. Remember to Keep Yourselves in the Love of God. v. 21
Once again we see the need for personal responsibility. This does not mean that we are the ones who keep ourselves saved. We are in His hand and nothing can pluck us out. Peter told us that we are kept by the power of God. “Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. ” (1 Peter 1:5)
This verse is an exhortation to stay close to Him in our walk, which comes through prayer and the Word of God. Make no mistake, God expects us to assume responsibility for keeping ourselves in the loving will of our Holy God.
Jesus taught us that keeping the commandments is the key to abiding in God’s love. “ If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.” (John 15:10) If we are unwilling to live our lives according to the teaching of the Bible, we have no hope of being able to keep ourselves in the love of God. We will wander aimlessly and live defeated lives.
VI. Remember to Look for the Mercy of Our Lord. v. 21
We must always be looking forward. We should be looking forward to the blessed hope, which is the second coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. “ For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope , and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:11-13)
We should be looking forward to the coming of the day of the Lord. (2 Pet. 3:10-12) This is entirely different from the blessed hope in Titus 2:11-13. The blessed hope is for the rapture of the saints. The day of the Lord is the coming of the Lord in righteous judgment on this wicked world. Paul speaks of this time also, and he describes it as a time of great judgment on the earth. “And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Thess. 1:7-8)
Christians are to be looking for the new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. (2 Pet. 3:13-14) If our thoughts and hope are centered on this present evil world, we cannot be in the will of God.
Especially should our minds be centered on eternal life and mercy. Eternal life is not something we earn, but is graciously given in Christ Jesus. We are saved, not by works of righteousness, but according to His mercy, that we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:4-7)
VII. Remember to Be Compassionate, with Fear. v. 22- 23
There is a great need for compassion, which is sadly missing in the lives of most Christians today. We are so wrapped up in our own thoughts and desires, that we have no time to have compassion on others.
Compassion is needed to move us to action. “But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.” (Matt. 9:36-38) If we have no compassion, we will never see the multitudes as Jesus saw them. He saw them as eternity bound souls and with no shepherd to guide them off of the deadly path they were on.
We need compassion to pull them as firebrands from the fire. (v. 23) Everyday lost souls are dying, and going into a Christless eternity where they will suffer eternal punishment in the fires of hell. Have we no concern for these poor lost souls? If we have compassion it will make a difference how we live and how we look upon lost people.
Compassion is needed to properly handle the saved who are in danger. “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.” (Gal. 6:1) The Christians who have sinned need compassion, and not vicious criticism. They need a helping hand not a shove that will send them into deeper sin.
Our job is to instruct those that have strayed away from the truth. “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” (2 Tim. 2:25-26) It will make a difference in their lives!
The Need For Fear is greatly needed in the lives of the saints. We need to fear lest we be caught up in the same error of the wicked. (Gal. 6:1) We need to be motivated to persuade those in danger of being lost. “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.” (2 Cor. 5:10-11)
Let us heed this exhortation of Jude. We need to remember the words spoken before by the apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ. God’s people should be building themselves up in the most holy faith, and praying in the spirit. Let us notice that Jude says we are to keep ourselves in the love of God, look for the mercy the Lord Jesus Christ, and be compassionate, with fear. If we keep what he has told us, we will be seeking to reach lost souls, so that they will not go into the fires of hell.

Dismantling biblical Christianity is high on the agenda of some political leaders, the liberal media, and Hollywood's morally deficient. Running a close second in this race to strip Christianity of any similarity to that of New Testament days are parasitic religionists who want to embellish their emergence on the denominational scene. These merchants of ecumenical hodge-podge spirituality are bent on placing the true worship of the only one true God on the level with every false god they discover. Much advice is written, generally aimed toward dedicated Christians, on how to achieve religious neutrality and ecumenicity. This is nothing short of stripping true Christianity of its views of and service to the true and eternal God who has forever inhabited eternity. Becoming more vocal is the gullible growing group that are now accepting, and teaching, that God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have counterparts of equal quality in other religions. Who, if not the same God, are as equally able to make heaven as accessible. For this to be accomplished there has to be some conciliations made. Of course it will always be Christianity that must "learn" to be more tolerant of other religions. High on the list for Christians to subscribe to is a . . .
Christian-Muslim Dialogue
The Institute on Religion and Democracy, May 7, 2003, publishes these guidelines for Christian-Muslim Dialogue. Notice carefully who is required to become more sympathetic.
"Try to formulate and celebrate common acts of worship. As Christians who worship God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as instructed by our Lord Jesus, we find any worship that omits those names and concepts of God (offensive to Muslims) to be impoverished rather than enriched. We do not wish to strip our worship down to the point that Muslims would find it acceptable, nor do we require Muslims to reduce their worship to a point that would be acceptable to Christians. It is better to worship alongside Muslims, with them practicing what they consider to be proper worship while we Christians observe, and vice versa, rather than trying to have a common worship."
This sounds too much like Sanballat and Geshem calling for Nehemiah to "come down" to their plain and meet together. (Neh. 6:2) I pray the Lord's church and their overseers see the same thing in this that Nehemiah saw: "But they thought to me mischief." Why would any Christian worship need to "observe" an Islamic worship service? The surest method false religion can use to gain converts is to teach their doctrine to willing listeners. Many have fallen into false religion simply by listening to counterfeit religious practices until they become convinced it is not so bad. True believers in Christ need not know all false doctrine. They only need to know the truth and truth will reveal error. Even a child will soon learn that a square peg will not fit in a round hole. Knowing the eternal circle of the doctrine of Christ will reveal that any un-round false doctrine will not fit. Just simply know the truth and it will always set you free.
Islam is reported to be a peaceful religion by leaders in both religion and politics. Bill Hybels' Willow Creek mega-church made plans for a Muslim leader to present Islamic teachings as reported in the July 2002 PBC . He must have believed the report that Islam is peaceful enough to walk beside. His mind, and that of others, would very likely be quickly reversed if he tried to promote Christianity where Islam is the national religion. Christians are being murdered in such countries for witnessing for Christ. National Christian pastors are killed, and their families, if not murdered as well, are tortured and live in fear. Be sure if there is to be harmony between Islam and true Christianity, Christianity will have to compromise because Islam will not. The question that Amos submits will have to be answered if there is to be a Christian-Muslim dialogue. (Amos 3:3) "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?"
The guidelines for such a dialogue says that rather than stripping our Christianity down that it might be acceptable to the Muslims, just try to get along. It is just as impossible to walk with false religion as it is to walk with the world and remain true to God.
Promoting Acceptance of Islam
Fuller Seminary News & Events , Nov. 20, 2003: "Muslim Public Affairs Representatives to Speak at Fuller." Australian Ind. Bapt. Newsletter , 12/15/03, gives this account of the event.
"As part of Fuller Seminary's focus on the Muslim celebration of Ramadan, Aslam Abdullah, the editor of The Minaret and Sireen Sawaaf , Hate Crimes Prevention Coordinator at Muslim Public Affairs, will be speaking on Fuller's Pasadena campus……" Abdullah spoke on "the similarities between Islam, Christianity and Judaism." The editor of AIBN gives this information from an Islamic web site. Appendix 22 of the Authorized English translation of the Quran by Dr. Rashad Khalifa we read "The Quran, informs us that Jesus was a human messenger of God whose sole mission was to deliver God's message; he never possessed any power, and is now dead (4:171, 5:75, 117). Those who consider Jesus to be God, or Son of God, or part of a trinity are 'pagans' (5:17, 72, 73)."
The only similarities between Islam, Christianity, and Judaism is the dissimilarities one from another. This reveals the true color of Fuller Theological Seminary, located in Pasadena, CA. They advertise to be an "evangelical center of faith and learning where people study God's Word and pursue His calling in their lives." Why then invite a Muslim, Aslam Abdullah, to speak on "the similarities between Islam, Christianity, & Judaism?" The greater topic for this gathering would be for Fuller Seminary professors to teach Abdullah how different Christianity is from Islam. Why would any parent allow their children to attend such a seminary?
Such action of Fuller Seminary reveals their statement of faith means little to them. Their statement reads: "Scripture is an essential part and trustworthy record of divine self-disclosure. All the books of the Old and New Testaments, given by divine inspiration, are the written Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice. They are to be interpreted according to their context and purpose and in reverent obedience to the Lord who speaks through them in living power." If even this portion of their statement of faith was believed, how could Fuller possibly be justified in permitting anyone to speak, especially an Islamic religious leader, on the similarities between Islam and Christianity.
Symbols Of Christianity Challenged
The removal of the Ten Commandments monument from the Ala. State Capitol Rotunda is only a slight symptom of future stripping of Christianity. The present battle against the forces of evil have only partially began. Removing "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance is high on the agenda of those who wish to strip Christianity of any public recognition of our God and His Son, Jesus Christ. Every symbol of Christianity, whether or not endorsed by all Christians, is surely facing a challenge.
The NY City public school system refused a student displaying the nativity scene at her school while permitting a display of a Hanukkah menorah. Even the star and crescent representing Islam could be exhibited according to Fox News , 12/5/03. Christians should not be surprised at this since the Apostle John wrote in (1John 3:13) "Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you."
It would seem the sad catastrophe of 9/11 would open minds concerning the Muslim religion. Muslims consider America their religious enemy. It was Muslims who forced the planes into the WTC towers. Yet the NYC school board has allowed an all gay high school to embark on a new frontier of education. I remind you again of the resentfulness that would hit the airways as well as the legal system of the ACLU if an all Christian high school was established in NYC. No doubt their own Sen. H. R. Clinton would be among the first to call in the dogs to rid NYC of such an offensive stink.
Christmas Symbols Attacked
Whatever we may think of the date of Christ's birth, Christmas is symbolic of celebrating His birth. We may even disagree on the actual time of year. Or even how Christmas (Christ's Mass) came to be, may be questioned. One thing all believers in Christ will agree on is that it some how is a time of remembrance of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is for these, a time mostly for rejoicing in His coming. This is also being stripped of the respect it deserves as a time to remember our Savior.
Displays and symbols of Christmas are often the subject of controversies. Even to the point of having to be settled(?) in court. For some reason the idea of American families celebrating Christmas provokes other religions. Christmas emblems are demanded to be removed from public places while other religions can freely display their religious symbols.
This brief history of Christmas in America is found in The Federalist , 12/23/03. "The first state to declare Christmas a legal holiday was Massachusetts in 1856. By the Civil War era, most of our shared Christmas traditions were set, and the January 3, 1863, issue of Harper's Weekly featured a drawing of encamped soldiers receiving Christmas gifts from home. Nearly all Americans (96%) celebrate Christmas today in some form or another. However, that very uniformity belies the variance with which, as in colonial days, Americans hold this holiday apart."
What a sad coincident that in the very state that led in the acceptance of Christmas as a holiday (holy day) is a leader in gay movement rights. The question leaps out of this account, "Would the present counterparts to those of the past who made this declaration do the same today?"
The system in America that is working feverishly to strip Christianity of any semblance of the true God will not stop of their own volition. That perilous times are advancing at breakneck speed can be ignored only by the unconcerned. The condition we face today in America cannot be addressed more clearly than by using these words of Isaiah in chapter one verse four. "Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward."
Such disastrous conditions of our land can further be stated by using Isaiah's words. ". . . judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment." (Isa. 59:14,15) Is all hope gone? Not at all!! (2 Chron. 7:14) "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." But some will say, this was written to Israel. It was indeed, and Israel was God's chosen people. Believer's in Christ are His children as well. (Rom. 10:12) "For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Many medical entities, such as the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have caved in on the crucial issue of abortion. They have largely abandoned the physicians’ original Hippocratic Oath that pledged ”I will not give to a woman an instrument to produce abortion.”
Not so the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), which was founded in 1943 as a nonpartisan professional association of physicians from all medical practices and specialties. The AAPS continues to espouse a solidly pro-life position. For instance, the third plank of its principles of medical ethics asserts that the physician ”should not condone the taking of human life in the practice of his profession, but at all times respect the sanctity of human life and seek to preserve or improve the quality of life.”
During its 60th annual meeting from September 17-19, the AAPS reiterated its stance with a hard-hitting resolution captioned ”Affirming the Sanctity of Human Life.” For the record, it is reproduced here in its entirety:
WHEREAS: the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons stands on the principles of the Hippocratic Oath, which oath clearly opposes abortion of a developing human child;
WHEREAS: teachings of the major religions of the world have opposed abortion of a developing human child until very recent times;
WHEREAS: even if religion is removed from the issue of abortion of a human child, without life as the ultimate ethic, no objective ethical standard remains;
WHEREAS: the unborn child in the womb meets the definition of a human being, and people’s choices are limited by government when those choices would harm another human being;
WHEREAS: the purpose of abortion of a human child is to destroy the life of the child, in contradistinction to other terminations of pregnancy to save the life of the mother, in which an attempt would also [be] made to save the life of the child;
WHEREAS: our society will not permit a woman to terminate the life of her unwanted child after birth, despite its total dependence, even in the privacy of her own home in consultation with her physician; and
WHEREAS: the public’s right to know and to make an informed decision about abortion of a human child has never been made possible by the opportunity to view various methods of abortion at different stages of gestation;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons supports the right to life of human beings from the moment of conception to natural death.

Chapter 20 from the book “The Religion Racket.” Today’s religion is often very open and just about every subject can be freely discussed from the pulpit. The preacher soon learns, however, there is one thing that must never be discussed. If the preacher does mention this subject, the faces of the men will harden, young people will become nervous and giggle while mothers will clasp their hands over the ears of their children to keep them from hearing. One subject that is taboo...money!
In most churches, money is a dirty word. In any other area of life it is a cherished possession and is much sought after, but in church it is “filthy lucre.” To talk about money seems to express a lack of faith. It just seems so nonreligious. This is very strange. Nearly everyone has an income of some kind and has bills and payments that must be met. Salaries, pensions, income, bills, taxes, mortgages, prices, budgets, loans, monthly payments, etc. make money a very large part of daily life. Money is accepted as an honorable essential in our way of life...everywhere, that is, except in religion.
All church members recognize that money is necessary in maintaining their buildings and activities, but no one is supposed to talk about it publicly. Preachers are among the most underpaid employees in the country. People seem to feel that since preachers are men of great faith they do not need money like anyone else. In spite of this, sometime or other, practically every preacher, directly or indirectly, will be accused of being a money charlatan.
This attitude in the churches toward money has produced a variety of methods of getting money without really saying the word. It is a kind of painless extraction! This is a real task because everyone knows the difficulty of getting money from people without their crying out in pain. All this puts religion in an awkward position when it comes to finances. A manufacturer puts a price on his product that will cover his production costs and return a profit. The wholesaler and retailer buy the product and sell it for a profit. The employer determines what he can pay in the way of salaries and the employee knows what he needs in wages. Theaters, movie houses, concerts, etc., all charge an admission that covers their cost and returns a profit. This is standard procedure...everywhere except in church.
A church will have set financial responsibilities to be met but will have no way of determining a set income. The financial income of religion is determined by what the people happen to feel like giving. This creates a situation where the average church is always under financial stress and must wait anxiously from offering to offering to see if the generosity of the people matches the size of the current bills.
No business could operate in the manner of a church. Consider the building a church must maintain. First, there is the auditorium. In the average church of today they are holding one service a week, and this results in the auditorium being used less than two hours a week! There are large departmental assembly rooms in the Sunday School that are used about ten to fifteen minutes a week. Sunday School classrooms are actually in use about 35 minutes a week. The average large church of today must build and maintain an expensive building that is going to be used less than two hours a week! The only parts of today’s church buildings that seem to get a lot of use are the kitchen, dining room, and recreation room. Today’s church would rather play than pray. He prefers feasting over fasting and dancing over devotions.
In general, religion is always looking for ways of raising money. Rummage sales are a big thing. There always seems to be something a little sad about a rummage sale. There will be a little crude, homemade sign out in front of a large, ornate church proclaiming the fact that a rummage sale is in progress. Proud ladies in all their finery will be bringing in their old clothes to sell, and all the proceeds go to help out the poor religion. Pie sales and bake sales are always popular. The generous members will each bake a cake or pie that will be sold and the money given to the church.
Pledges are a must in most churches. The pastor and a faithful committee will go around to the homes of the members soliciting a pledge for meeting the coming year’s budget. Religion, the supreme possession of life, is allowed to be reduced to begging for its existence. The last thing that should ever hinder the work of religion is a lack of money. However, it usually is the number one problem. Bazaars, festivals, fish frys, car washes, bingo, raffles, paper drives, etc., are all used a lot by religion to raise money. It seems that the main activity of religion is raising money.
Receiving the offering is an important part of a church service. Typically, offering plates are passed among the people, and they drop in their gift of whatever amount they desire. This produces some very odd situations. For instance, one member can sacrificially and regularly give a good amount every week. Another member shows up at church once or twice a year and drops in a dime, and both of these members are accepted equally in the church!
An individual who would never allow himself to be thought of as a freeloader anywhere else doesn’t seem to mind it at church. Nonsupporters feel no embarrassment in knowing that there are those who are willingly sacrificing in order to maintain a church so it will be there when the non-supporter happens to attend. The nonsupporters would be outraged at the idea of closing down the church he never supports. Maybe religion should be allowed to sue for non-support.
All these freeloaders and nonsupporters show up on Easter Sunday and are treated as honored guests! The attendance will almost double on Easter Sunday, but the offering will stay the same!
The money given to churches is deductible when the income tax is figured. This is a big boon to churches, but it does create some problems. In order to deduct the contributions to the church, a record has to be kept of the amount given, and this can be embarrassing. To give when no one knows what you are giving is one thing...to give when a record is kept is another. In order for the church to keep a record of the amount given, offering envelopes have to be used. The giver puts his offering in an envelope and marks the amount on the outside. A lot of folks had to face up to a tough decision. First, they could suffer the embarrassment of admitting how little they were giving and use it as a deduction. Second, they could increase their giving and pretend this is what they had been giving all along. Third, they could refuse to use the envelopes rather than reveal how little they were giving. Of course, this costs them their deduction.
There is probably more grumbling and complaining about the necessity of the church continually seeking money than anything else. Listening to the average church would bring the conclusion that religion had a gun at his back and robbed him every week. Some folks complain so much about giving they don’t have time to give. The church is a nonprofit organization, and they want to make sure that it stays that way.
We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passion unbridled by MORALITY AND RELIGION. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our constitution as a whale through a net. Our constitution was made only for a MORAL AND RELIGIOUS PEOPLE. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

On the aluminum cap atop the Washington Monument in Washington DC are two words: Laus Deo. No one can see these words. In fact ... most visitors to the monument have no idea they are even there and.... for that matter ... probably couldn’t care less!
But there they are ... 555 feet, 5.125 inches high ... perched atop the monument to the father of our nation ... overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia ... capital of the United States of America.
Laus Deo! Two seem insignificant, unnoticed words ... out of sight and, one might think, out of mind ... but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the world.
And what might those two words ... comprised of just four syllables and only seven letters ... mean?
Very simply ... “Praise be to God!”
Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848 when James Polk was President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took twenty five years to finally cap the memorial with the tribute Laus Deo! Praise be to God!
From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure ... a visitor can take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major segments. And from that vantage point one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l’Enfant ... a perfect cross imposed upon the land... with the White House to the north ... the Jefferson Memorial to the south ... the Capitol to the east... and the Lincoln Memorial to the west. A cross ... you say?
How interesting! And ... no doubt,... intended to carry a meaning for those who bother to notice. Praise be to God! Within the monument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one climbs the steps and pauses at the landings the memorial stones share a message. On the 12th Landing is a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore; on the 20th is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians; on the 24th a presentation made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia quoting Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6. Praise be to God!
When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848, deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society. Praise be to God! Such was the discipline, the moral direction, the spiritual mood given by the founder and first President of our unique democracy... “one nation, under God.”
I am awed by Washington’s prayer for America. Have you never read it? Well now is your opportunity... read on!
“Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to govern; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United states at large.” “And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean our with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation.
“Grant our supplication, we be Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
Laus Deo!
As you might have guessed... I kind of like the idea that our Pledge of Allegiance includes the phrase “under God.” It is clear when one studies the history of our great nation that Washington’s America was one of the few countries in all the world established under the guidance, direction and banner of Almighty God, to whom was given all praise, honor and worship by the great men who formed and fashioned her pivotal foundations. And ... when one stops to observe the inscriptions found in public places all over our nation’s capitol ... one will easily find the signature of God.
We are a nation under God!!! Laus Deo!!! Praise be to God!!!
“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” (Psalms 127:1)
—From The National Statesman
“I have come to the conviction that Martin Luther made a mistake. He should never have left the Roman Catholic Church. I am eradicating the word Protestant out of my vocabulary. I am not protesting anything. It’s time for Catholics and non-Catholics to come together as one in the Spirit and one in the Lord.”

hollywood's Depraved Sensuality— Hollywood has long glorified and exported all manner of ungodliness. The marketing of evil provides billions of dollars in profits through promoting youth rebellion; sexual freedom and wanton perversion; mutilation of the body; obscene, suicidal, and murderous lyrics; and gangland and satanic clothing. Could Sodom and Gomorrah have been much worse? Berean Call, (2/2/04) Anyone with average awareness of the rapid sensual advancement in all corners of the globe will have to agree that the leading edge in this progress centers in Hollywood. This is searing the conscience of America, with the help of the liberal news media, fearfully beyond help. Lust conceives sin and sin conceives death. Society needs to k now, yet will ignore, this advice in 1 Thes. 4:4,5: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God . . . . (W. W. Mosley, hereafter WWM.)
Mega-Church Maneuvers— The Christian Science Monitor, 12/30/03, reveals the ever increasing method of growing megachurches. A singer steps to the podium . . . in front of 16,000 cheering Sunday worshipers and proclaims: We re going to rock today. This place has been rocked a lot of times, but its never been rocked for Jesus. The setting was a sports arena in Houston, TX. Seeker-friendly services with youth-oriented activity are quickly and surely replacing the Holy Spirit blessed, God honoring services of the past. Worship services in the setting above are replacing the local church established worship of our Lord. Those who attend such off-color rituals convince themselves that they have really had a spiritual experience. The question must be asked, but what spirit? (2 Cor. 11:14) And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. To say that our youth today have to be entertained by the world's methods in the world's setting is downgrading to our young people. In 1970, there were 10 megachurches nationwide (defined as non-Catholic churches with at least 2,000 weekly attendants). Today there are 740, according to Church Growth Today, a Bolivar, Mo., organization. Berean Call, (2/2/04) —WWM
Who Watches Robert Schuller?— The Berean Call, 2/2/04, reveals that Schullers Hour of Power reaches 20 million viewers weekly. The BC also reminds us of an interview on Larry King Live, 12/19/98, when the megachurch builder declared, We have to find God in our own way . . . . If this we re not so serious it would be amusing that anyone calling themselves a Christian could be misled by such well concealed hypocrisy. This is worlds removed from our Lords statement to Thomas in John 14:6. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Those who follow Schullers advice to find God in their own way are sure to fail, . . . for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:12) —WWM
Spirit-Filled Preaching or Psychological Sentimentality— When Paul commanded Timothy to preach the word, (2 Tim. 4:2) it included reproof, rebuke, exhortation, and doctrine. Admonishment to righteousness, censuring sin, and the Bible doctrine of repentance, which a lone can bring sinners near to God, is being replace by psycho-babble chatter. Patterning Bill Hybels Willow Creek seeker-services is becoming common practice even among Baptist churches. This is nothing short of the same sales pitch promotions used by vacuum cleaner salesman. Feel how light it is. It almost runs itself. That is the kind of religion the lost world will accept. Nothing to make them feel the burden of sin, and a religion that will run itself without their presence. The man after Gods own heart spake the words: (Psa. 51:3) For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Preachers must remind their hearers that the old man must die that it might not serve sin. (Rom. 6:6) —WWM
Racy Rhythm, Debauched Dancing, Gapping Garments— This is descriptive of the corrupt super-bowl half-time show (no pun). More serious than this is that many Baptist did not find out about this on the evening news, but their churches either dismissed evening services, or religiously had a meal at the church that day and a brief afternoon service, or maybe even had a large screen installed so the church could have fellowship and watch the all important game together. NewsMax, 2/10/04, reports the store who made Janet Jackson s break-away garment is concerned that people will think the rubber bustier . . . was flimsy. Also saying further they were known for putting together solid, long-lasting pieces. This may be so, but you can also be sure they will have a rush on for similar garments by those who deem Jackson their idol, and her maneuver their style. With all the hype about who is to blame for this vulgarity, you can be sure no one is idle about future half-time shows. Many fans will be waiting anxiously for whatever may top this. —WWM
Is This Church Hopping?— Michael Jackson has moved from the Jehovahs Witnesses to rabbi counseling to the Nation of Islam to Voodoo. (NewsMax, 2/10/04) The report said MJ hired a witch doctor to make sure his surroundings were free of evil spirits. From the looks of portions of his antics seen on the news, Dr. Witch might lessen his chores if he just threw out MJ himself. How many who claim to be Christians have aided in making this freak a multi-millionaire? Better beware!! (1 Cor. 15:33) Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. —WWM
Airline May Veto Pilots Vocal Christianity— A Christian pilot who recently invited passengers to participate in a discussion of Christianity during a cross-country flight may be grounded for his actions. Just before takeoff last Friday, American Airlines (AA) Capt. Rodger Findiesen, who lives near Annapolis, Md., asked passengers aboard Flight 34 from Los Angeles to New York to raise their hands if they are Christians, The Baltimore Sun reported. Chrisma News Serv. , (2/12/04) Believers on this flight must have been encouraged to know their pilot was a Christian. The anti-Christian crowd might have reason to be alarmed since it is possible the rapture of the saints might take place while they were airborne and they would be left more out of control than ever. —WWM
There Is No Redefining Marriage— At this writing some 14 states are considering a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Multiple states are considering same sex marriages as legally acceptable as man/woman marriages. Since no continent, nation, or state, or even the church for that matter, established or defined marriage originally, where do any of the afore mentioned systems get their authority to re-define marriage? God established marriage between the first man and woman. The couple were referred to as the man and his wife. (Gen. 2:24) Although homosexuals will argue that one of the partners is the wife and the other is the husband, the differences is that Adam called his wife, Woman , because she was taken out of Man . (Gen. 2:23) These are titles, evidence of their different classification, and able to come together to produce offspring. This resulted in Eve conceiving a son. (Gen. 4:1) Man may change/re-define the law he has made, but the marriage definition is a law written by God, who does not change, and no man can change it. —WWM
Discrimination Not Allowed In America— That is unless it is against the Christian religion. In 2002 an Ohio judge ruled that teacher s passing out flyers for religious groups was unconstitutional. The Crestview School District were accused of activities that were in violation of the so-called separation of Church and State. Crosswalk , (2/13/04) First Amendment rights of free speech ca n be used successfully to flood airways with vulgarity. But not for promoting the cause of Christ. Although it would be stretching the truth to claim that America is a Christian country, it cannot be denied that our nation has deep roots in belief in the true God. Laus Deo atop the Washington Monument may have to be chiseled out to satisfy separation of Church and State if the ACLU find out it is there. Praise be to God we still have an America. —WWM
Americans Offended By Sin?— Only slightly over half of the citizenry of America are offended by rank sin, and even fewer can blush. . . .a new survey was released showing a majority of Americans are offended by TV indecency. The poll, conducted by The Gallup Organization, found 58 percent of Americans a re offended by profanity or curse words, 58 percent are offended by sexual content and 52 percent are offended by homosexuality on television. The survey, conducted Feb. 6-8, also found 61 percent of Americans are offended by TV violence. Baptist Press , (2/13/04) The effort to clear up air-ways is already defeated, unless hearts are first cleared up before God. It is from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. (Matt. 12:34) —WWM
Getting Use To The Dark— The same poll gave this fearful news about the destiny of our land. It . . . revealed a vast difference by age in Americans response to TV indecency. It found the older the person is, the more likely he was to be offended. For instance, 80 percent of those 65 years of age or older said they were offended by sexual content, but only 35 percent of those between 18 and 29 said they were offended by such material. On the issue of homosexuality on TV, 72 percent of senior citizens said they were offended, while only 25 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds said they were. BP , (2/13/04) If this is any where near a true fact, where will we be 10 to 15 years from now? Sinful humanity has the ability to adjust to sin much better than to righteousness. (Heb. 3:13) But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. —WWM
Creation Sudden Or Prolonged?— A book defending young-earth creationism is being sold at the Grand Canyon. Sales are growing, and the controversy is evolving into a test case for free speech. Christianity Today , (2/11/04) It only took one park employee to start a ruckus about promoting religion at a national reservation. Since God created the earth and all it s inhabitants in six days, why would it take Him a million years to dig the Grand Canyon? Maybe we could find out from those folks who believe it took millions of years for God to petrify a forest in Arizona. Gap theory promoters cannot envision God s powerfulness to create a fossil as quickly as he can a fellow. Simply because many church members are late for services does not imply that God is slow at work. —WWM
Another Fellowship Enhancement— Programs abound with the promise to entice youth or increase attendance at church. Read this testimony but don't fall for it. It was through my church that a seed was planted and a softball team there helped me stay committed while that seed grew until I was saved as a born again Christian. (Sounds like a process.) I have coached and played on many church teams and in my opinion, these sports programs truly help in bringing people to Christ. This software salesman went on to say, I hope that you will let your coaches and congregation know about my software, as it will truly enhance your sports program and possibly help bring many more people into fellowship with our lord and savior, Jesus Christ. Sounds like just the thing for those who use worldly enticements to keep their youth entertained. This is not what the Holy Spirit intended in Prov. 22:6. It was the knowledge of the Scripture s from his youth that made Timothy wise unto salvation. (2 Tim. 3:15) Better stick to Scriptural encouragement. Thank God for young people who do not have to be entertained in a secular setting to get or keep them in service to the Lord. —WWM
Conservative Presbyterian Minister Defrocked— The Presbyterian Church USA has disavowed the ministry of a theologically conservative pastor who has spoken out against the denomination s support for abortion and homosexuality. Crosswalk , (2/11/04) The Presbyterian pastor urged his members to consider restricting their tithes and offerings to specific ministries that are faithful to scripture. Going the way of the Episcopal church seems fashionable to the Presbyterian Lay Committee who made this move. Although independent Baptist have no similar committees, some members might consider restricting support of unscriptural practices that are not biblically oriented. Let us not forget the only mission the Lord s church has been commissioned to carry out is missions! —WWM
School Board Rejects Gay Club— Last year the ACLU filed a lawsuit against the Boyd County (KY) school system over its refusal to allow a Gay-Straight Alliance club to meet on school grounds. The pastor of Heritage Free Will Baptist Church there . . .feel s the Boyd County case is just another example of how the federal court system is permitting public schools across the country to be bombarded with the homosexual agenda. Crosswalk , (2/12/04) If this pastor or any other pastor in any other school district in the U.S. wanted to start a club teaching Christian morality, he would be the one facing a lawsuit by the ACLU. The ACLU might also get the support of some of the Demo presidential candidates. Last day blasphemers are gathering for the kill. What a surprise they have in store. —WWM
San Francisco Mayor Orders Gay Marriage— More than 1,700 other gay and lesbian couples have exchanged vows in the last few days in San Francisco, but Christian legal groups are hoping to block the same-sex unions. Newly-elect ed, liberal San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom touched off the wedding spree by ordering officials last Thursday to issue licenses to same-sex couples, declaring that he was merely ensuring equal treatment of homosexuals. Crosswalk , (2/17/04) Merely ensuring equal treatment of homosexuals will not suffice when this mayor stands before God. (Rom. 14:12) The mayor has issued a decree that cannot be implemented. It is impossible for homosexuals to have the same quality of married life as that of a man and woman. This is true not only in their physical relationship, but also in their emotional and spiritual relationship. —WWM
Over 4,000 Sexually Abusive Priests in 50 Years— About 4 percent of Catholic priests have been accused of sexually abusing minors over the past half-century, according to a draft of the first comprehensive study of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church in the United States. The percentage is higher than many people, including church officials, had anticipated. ( Boston Globe ,2/17/04) A study done by a Criminal Justice group found that 4,450 of the 110,000 priests who served between 1950&2002 were accused of sexual abuse of minors. Nothing is said in the study how many others committed adultery/fornication with others within the church. W hen so much was being publicized of this activity, a top Vatican official, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, said in 2002, according to the Catholic News Service: In the United States, there is constant news on this topic, but less than 1 percent of priests are guilty of acts of this type. So much for the Vatican cover-up. —WWM
Rev. Jesse&Same-Sex Marriage— Jackson said he ...supports equal protection under the law for gay couples, but stopped short of supporting same-sex marriage,... BG , (2/17/04) He also said that we all as citizens have the right to choose our partners. It seems the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition leader had some difficulty in making his choice, since he fathered an extra marital child. Or was he simply exercising his right as a citizen to choose another partner as the occasion arose? (Matt. 7:15) Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheeps clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. —WWM
Vulgarity No Longer Shocking?— A vulgar word that I will not even abbreviate here is intermingling with other vulgarities in satanic rhetoric upon society. Time magazine essayist Lance Morrow said: Somehow, the whole sociology of [the word] has changed. The word did not appear in any dictionaries of the English language from 1795-1965, according to an etymological website. BG , (2/12/04) Presidential wannabe, John Kerry, used the word in a Dec. interview rebuking Pres. Bush for his policies. Some pop singers use it in their performances and lyrics. It is clearly used by many athletes after missing their mark. Will it one day be as commonly heard in casual conversation as other words we have become accustomed to? I pray that true believers will never become used to the dark world of sin. Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: (Phil. 1:27), will keep this from happening. —WWM
BWA Too Liberal For SBC— The executive committee of the Southern Bapt. Con. Voted Tuesday to withdraw from the Bapt. World Alliance, saying it has become too liberal and advocates aberrant and dangerous theologies. Altus Times , (2/18/04) Become too liberal implies the SBC at one time thought a little liberal was no problem. Yet the BWA have had some shady speakers over the years, such as Fidel Castro, 7/00. The SBC has aligned with spiritually disreputable organizations such as the Am. Bapt. Churches USA, as well as over 200 Baptist unions and conventions worldwide. And this motley group has just now become too liberal ? This separation is to be finalized on Oct. 1, the start of the fiscal year. That gives them time to mend differences, or for the BWA to become once again not too liberal. Maybe one smudge on a mirror is not too bad as long as the outline of an object can still be detected. Better heed 2 Cor. 6:17. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; . . . —WWM
ATT Demands Tolerance For Gays— A new ATT handbook contained a provision that each person at ATT Broadband is charged with the responsibility to fully recognize, respect and value the differences among all of us, including sexual orientation. One Albert Buonanno said his religious beliefs prevented him from condoning or approving of homosexuality. Crosswalk , (2/18/04) Mr. Buonanno was fired by ATT. It seem s federal laws protect sexual deviants but do not protect religious convictions. ATT, Disney, etc. simply make their own laws fitting their private opinions on moral issues. (1 John 4:5) They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. —WWM
Blatant Hypocrisy— A constitutional attorney with a Christian law firm says there is a clear double standard in the secular medias coverage of a decision by the mayor of San Francisco to grant marriage licenses to homosexual couples, and last summers refusal by Roy Moore to remove a Ten Commandments monument from a state building. AgapePress , (2/18/04) The same liberal secular media that plastered Judge Moore as a scoundrel, are now publicizing San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom as a champion for equal rights when he granted homosexuals marriage licenses. Sounds closely akin to the Jew s sentiment toward the Lord Jesus. Not this man, but Barabbas. (John 18:40) Kill the Master but release the murderer. —WWM
Grahams View Of Islam Is Correct— Franklin Graham says like it or not there are Muslim terrorists who are out to destroy America. He told the National Religious Broadcasters convention in Charlotte, NC, that while the terrorists don't necessarily represent all of Islam, the re are millions Muslims worldwide that agree with their goals. AG , (2/17/04) Graham is exactly right on this point. He also told the NRB that it is better to fight Islamic terrorists in Iraq than on American soil. It would be good if vocal Democratic Islamic sympathizers had the same view. Graham has personal experience of Islams destructive incentives toward Christianity. He said Sudan s Islamic regime has tried repeatedly to bomb his ministry's hospitals in southern Sudan, but have always missed. Be sure this satanic religion would and will do the same when they get a strong foothold in America. —WWM
