How Things Have Changed

Unholy Hands on God's Holy Book

Producing a Gender Neutral Bible

By E. L. Bynum

Bible believers are constantly amazed by the brazen efforts of mortal man to change the Word of God. In the last 50-years, we have seen assault after assault upon the infallible Word of God. The RSV, NASV, NIV, and the so-called Living Bible have chipped away the foundations laid by God Himself. No sooner are they finished with a new Bible, than they set out to revise it, or to produce another Bible under another name.

The New International Version (NIV), appeared on the scene back in the 70s. It first appeared as the work of the New York Bible Society. We opposed this version soon after it came out. In correspondence with the General Secretary of the New York Bible Society, we voiced our disapproval. I wrote a tract voicing our rejection of this perversion of the Word of God. We still print and distribute Should We Trust The New International Version?" (It is Tract # A-217, and you can obtain it from Tabernacle Baptist Church, P.O. Box 3100, Lubbock, TX 79452. Send $5.00 for 50 copies, postpaid in the USA.)

The New Gender Neutral TNIV

Several years ago, in Great Britain, a new NIV that was gender neutral was printed. Then they proceeded to produce one in the United States. There was widespread opposition among even those that had supported the NIV. As a result, they withdrew that new revision and signed an agreement that they would not do this. Now they are proceeding with this mutilation of the Word of God.

Regardless of what they say, this TNIV is an effort to appease the feminists, who want to dismantle the biblical order, and set up a feminine way of thinking. As far as we know they have not feminized God in their false Bible, but that will likely come next. It is a bold and vicious attempt to remove the masculine emphasis in the Bible. Without any textual authority from the Greek language, they have changed "him" to "them." They have changed "man" to "mortals" and many other examples are cited below. The NIV did not do this, but the TNIV dares to do it. We are not going to quote the NIV, because we consider it a bogus Bible in the first place.

Please notice the few Scriptures below in the King James Version, and see how they have butchered these verses in the Today's New International Version (TNIV). We have put many words in bold face type, so that you can see the awful changes that they have made.

The KJV Compared to the TNIV

Heb. 2:6-7
(KJV)
"What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour."
(TNIV) "What are mere mortals that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You made them a little lower than the angels; You crowned them with glory and honor."

Luke 17:3
(KJV)
Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.
(TNIV) If any brother or sister sins against you, rebuke the offender; and if they repent, forgive them.

John 6:33
(KJV)
For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
(TNIV) "For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

John 6:35
(KJV)
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
(TNIV) Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."

Acts 4:4
(KJV)
Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.
(TNIV) But many who heard the message believed, and the number of believers grew to about five thousand.

Acts 7:20
(KJV)
In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months.
(TNIV) "At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child. For three months he was cared for in his parents' home."

Acts 17:22
(KJV)
Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
(TNIV) Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious."

Acts 20:30
(KJV)
Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
(TNIV) "Even from your own number some will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them."

Romans 3:28
(KJV)
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
(TNIV) For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

Hebrews 12:7
(KJV)
If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
(TNIV) Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their parents?

James 1:12
(KJV)
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
(TNIV) Blessed are those who persevere under trial, because when they have stood the test, they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

James 3:1
(KJV)
My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
(TNIV) Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers and sisters, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

Revelation 3:20
(KJV)
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
(TNIV) Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them, and they with me.

Many Other Gender Changes

These are only a very few of the gender changes found in the TNIV. These people have the audacity to think that they can change what God has said, in order to be politically correct. Do not think for one minute that they will be satisfied with this unholy desire to change the Word of God. They have placed their unholy hands, guided by their unholy minds, upon the Holy Word of God. They are following the example of the serpent who freely changed the Word of God to suit himself. "Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" (Genesis 3:1) Satan is the founder of the "Yea, hath God said" Society, and the TNIV Committee is doing his work for him.

Who Are The Backers of TNIV?

From the Web Page of the TNIV, we take the following quote.

"Background on the Committee on Bible Translation. The TNIV was developed by the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT), the same group that produced the NIV. The CBT includes renowned, conservative linguists and biblical scholars from the most trusted institutions in the world. They come from a variety of denominational affiliations and theological backgrounds. This diversity creates a system of checks and balances, ensuring absolute accuracy."

What a cruel joke that these people would claim "absolute accuracy," for their mutilation of the Word of God. They indicate that their scholars come from the following institutions.

They list their scholars (?) as being from the following denominations. I am horrified that anyone who claimed to be an Independent Baptist would approve of this unscriptural work. However, the title Independent Baptist, covers a lot of sin and error today. It is almost surprising that the Roman Catholic Church is not mentioned also.

We quote the following taken from their web page.

"The CBT's sole mission is to accurately communicate the meaning of the original text in contemporary English. This group has earned the trust of over 150 million people (those who have had and used the NIV during the last 25 years) primarily because they have done their job well by clearly translating the original Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew languages into the English language without sacrificing accuracy. The TNIV upholds the same standards of accuracy, clarity and meticulous scholarship of the NIV. That same reliability underscores every change in this revision of the NIV, called the TNIV."

My comment on this statement is very simple. If they were faithful in translating the NIV, as they claim, why do they need the TNIV today? The answer should be obvious to all. They would not need it. Will they be satisfied with the TNIV? The answer must be a resounding NO! They will never be satisfied with confusing and misleading people by changing the Word of God. There will always be opportunities to change and confuse. Besides, there is a lot of money in the Bible publishing business. Take the big profits out of it, and the revisions of the Bible would slow to a crawl.

There is Opposition to the TNIV

Many who backed and used the NIV, are now opposing the TNIV. We are glad of their opposition, but where were these people when the glaring errors of the NIV were being exposed by others. The Baptist Press released the information that 26 scholars have refused to endorse the TNIV. We quote the following from BP.

"The 26 scholars who have stated their refusal to endorse the TNIV include two Southern Baptist Convention seminary presidents, R. Albert Mohler Jr. of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Paige Patterson of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, along with Wayne Grudem of Phoenix Seminary in Scottsdale, Ariz., and a past president of the Evangelical Theological Society; Harold O. J. Brown of Reformed Theological Seminary; R.C. Sproul of Ligonier Ministries; John Piper of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis; and Raymond C. Ortlund Jr. of First Presbyterian Church, Augusta, Ga."

The one-paragraph scholars' statement in full:

"In light of troubling translation inaccuracies -- primarily (but not exclusively) in relation to gender language -- that introduce distortions of the meanings that were conveyed better by the original NIV, we cannot endorse the TNIV translation as sufficiently accurate to commend to the church."

Another leading theologian, J.I. Packer, did not add his name to the signatories, but told Baptist Press: "This [TNIV] is a retrograde move that the translators have made. I have read a text of a statement by Wayne Grudem and others, and I find myself in sympathy with it. I find it to be a passing modern fad, frankly, to object to the inclusive masculine pronoun. To change the shape of biblical verses to fit this fad leads to a good bit of under-translation. The masculine pronoun belongs in almost every language of the world. The gains that this translation seeks to achieve are far outweighed by the loss. I appreciate the NIV, and I think they have taken a wrong turn." Packer is a theology professor at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, and the author of numerous books, including "Knowing God."

According to BP, James Dobson will not support the TNIV. Notice the following quote.
James Dobson stated Feb. 5 he will not support the gender-neutral "Today's New International Version" revision of the widely used 1984 New International Version translation of the Bible.
Dobson said, in a prepared statement:

"... I have now received sufficient feedback from a large number of evangelical scholars to convince me that this new work is a step backward in the field of biblical translation. Accordingly, I am now adding my name to the list of those who disagree with the liberties [the International Bible Society] has taken with God's Word in the new translation."

"I love the Scriptures and I know them to be the very words of God to His creation. Like most evangelical Christians, I want my Bible to contain an accurate translation of the canonical Hebrew and Greek texts. Accordingly, I will continue to speak out against any effort that alters God's Word or toys with translation methodology for the sake of `political correctness.'"

A Serious Question for the 26 Scholars

If you love the Bible and believe it to be the Word of God, why would you ever endorse the NIV in the first place? When you jump on the New Version Translation train, you never can be quite sure where it is headed. The Holy Spirit is not the Engineer of this unholy train that is headed for a destination that does not lead to God.

Homosexual Plays in Public Schools

(Editor's Note by E. L. Bynum: By leaps and bounds the pro-homosexual agenda is being pushed upon America's children. This deadly disease spreading way of life is being promoted, because their agenda is the recruitment of young people to this filthy way of life. Thank God for the few brave souls who are willing to stand up against this plague. The following article by Ellen Sorokin, was published in The Washington Times National Weekly Edition, Feb. 25/Mar. 3, 2002)

Parents sue grade schools over pro-homosexual plays

A group of parents is suing a public school district in Novato, Calif., for allowing their elementary school-age children to see pro-homosexual plays at school without any prior notice or parental consent.

The parents charge that their constitutional and civil rights to the free exercise of religion and to direct the upbringing of their children were violated when their children saw the presentations at school assemblies in the Novato Unified School District last spring without their consent.

"It just seems like there's no room or any parents who don't agree with the school district's social agenda," said Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute, a legal defense organization that is representing the parents in the lawsuit.

"That may be fine for Hitler's Germany or Stalin's schools, but it's not fine for schools that are in a democratic country," Mr. Dacus said on Feb. 19.

The lawsuit is of particular importance in California, where state legislators in 2000 passed a law mandating that public schools there address homosexuality. The California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act required educators to revise state curriculum in such a way that students would be able to acknowledge homosexual, lesbian, transgender and bisexual historical figures and events.

The presentations exposed children between second and sixth grades to skits containing homosexual and lesbian themes. The skits were performed in February and March of 2001 at Pleasant Valley Elementary School and San Ramon Elementary School in Novato, a city in Marin County, Calif.

One skit, in which a boy named Jack wears a dress, talks about cross-dressing. Another skit deals with homosexuality, in which a female character runs off with a princess instead of a prince, according to lawyers who represent the parents.

School officials said they could not comment on the lawsuit or the program, called "Cootie Shots: Theatrical Inoculations Against Bigotry." "Cooties," an expression that in elementary-school circles refers to members of the opposite sex, are defined by the Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang as "an imaginary microbe or repulsive quality thought to be transmitted by slovenly or obnoxious people."

Dianne Pavia, director of public information for the Novato school district, said the Novato community suffered two hate-motivated incidents in 1998, one in which a racial comment was directed at a student during a sports event. The other incident involved battery against someone perceived to be homosexual.

"Providing a safe environment in our schools for everyone has and will always be our main priority," Miss Pavia said.

The presentations were followed by question and answer sessions about what constitutes "normal" families and acceptance of those who choose the homosexual lifestyle.

Parents claim in court papers they had, at the beginning of the school year, signed "opt-out" requests that allow their children not to attend such presentations throughout the school year. But their children saw the skits anyway and the parents claim they were never notified of the Cootie Shots assemblies, Mr. Dacus said.

When the parents asked school officials why the school district had not complied with their opt-out requests, school officials said many of the forms were "missing" according to court documents.

Mr. Dacus said his clients are not against homosexuality. However, he said, the fact that the school district ignored the opt-out forms steps on parental rights. "When the school board pushes an agenda that is in complete disregard for the rights of parents, then it becomes a principle of justice," Mr. Dacus said.

How Things Have Changed

A 70-year-old grandfather was asked by his young grandson how things have changed since he was a kid. His reply is worth reading. "Well, let me think a minute. I was born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the pill. There weren't things like radar, credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not invented pantyhose, dishwashers, clothes dryers, electric blankets, air conditioners, and he hadn't walked on the moon. Your grandma and I got married first then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother, and every boy over 14 had a rifle that his dad taught him how to use and respect. Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, `Sir' and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, `Sir.' Sundays were set aside for going to church as a family, helping those in need, and just visiting with family or neighbors. We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living here was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends not condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on radio. I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with `Made in Japan' on it, it was junk. The term `making out' referred to how you did on your school exam. Burger King, Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 & 10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards. You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day, `grass' was mowed, `coke' was a cold drink, `pot' was something your mother cooked in, and `rock music' was grandma's lullaby. `Aids' were helpers in the Principal's office, `chip' meant a piece of wood, `hardware' was found in a hardware store, and `software' wasn't even a word. And we were the last generation that was so dumb as to think a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us old and confused and say there is such a generation gap."

Mark of the Beast Made Easy?

(Editor's Note by E. L. Bynum: For years men have speculated how that the Mark of the Beast would be applied. [Revelation 13:16-17]. We do not say that the following is the Mark of the Beast, but undoubtedly it gives us a clue as to how this may be done. The following was taken from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal of Feb. 27, 2002)

Computer chip set to get under skin. Implant technology stirs privacy, theological concerns

A Florida technology company is poised to ask the government to market a first-ever computer ID chip that could be embedded beneath a person's skin.

For airports, nuclear power plants and other high-security facilities, the immediate benefits would be a closer-to-foolproof security system. But privacy advocates warn the chip could lead to encroachments on civil liberties.

The implant technology is another case of science fiction evolving into fact. Those who have long advanced the idea of implant chips say it could someday mean no more easy-to- counterfeit identification cards nor dozing security guards.

Just a computer chip about the size of a grain of rice that would be difficult to remove and tough to mimic.

Other possible uses of the technology, from an added device that would allow satellite tracking of an individual's every movement, to the storage of sensitive data like medical records, are already attracting interest across the globe for tasks like foiling kidnappings or assisting paramedics.

Applied Digital Solutions' new "VeriChip" is another sign that Sept. 11 has catapulted the science of security into a realm with uncharted possibilities and also new fears for privacy.

"The problem is that you always have to think about what the device will be used for tomorrow," said Lee Tien, a senior attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a privacy advocacy group.

"It's what we call function creep. At first a device is used for applications we all agree are good, but then it slowly is used for more than it was intended," he said.

Applied Digital, based in Palm Beach, Fla., says it will soon begin the process of getting Food and Drug Administration approval for the device, and intends to limit its marketing to companies that ensure its human use is voluntary.

"The line in the sand that we draw is that the use of the VeriChip would always be voluntarily," said Keith Bolton, chief technology officer and a vice president at Applied Digital: "we would never provide it to a company that intended to coerce people to use it."

More than a decade ago, Applied bought a competing firm, Destron Fearing, which had been making chips implanted in animals for several years.

Those chips were mainly bought by animal owners wanting to provide another way for pound workers to identify a lost pet.

Chips for humans aren't that much different.

But the company was hesitant to market them for people because of ethical questions. The devastation of Sept. 11 solidified the company's resolve to market the human chip and brought about a new sensibility about the possible interest.

"It's a sad time... when people have to wonder whether it's safe in their own country," Bolton said.

The makers of the chip also foresee it being used to help emergency workers diagnose a lost Alzheimer's patient or access an unconscious patient's medical history.

The chip has drawn attention from several religious groups.

Theologian and author Terry Cook said he worries the identification chip could be the "mark of the beast," an identifying mark that all people will be forced to wear just before the end times, according to the Bible.

Applied Digital has consulted theologians and appeared on the religious television program the "700 Club" to assure viewers that the computer chip didn't fit the biblical description of the mark because it is under the skin and hidden from view.

(Final note by PBC Editor: I hardly think that their proof of it not fitting the biblical description is valid. In my opinion this kind of technology could be used for this evil purpose.)
