SBTS President Cites Pres. Clinton's Home Church - R. Albert Mohler, Jr., is President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. In an interview with Baptist Press, 8/26/98, Mohler said the church of which President Clinton is a member has enabled him to "claim to be a Southern Baptist" while continuing his "public display of serial sin." This is allowed, he said, because Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock lacks the courage to discipline its most popular member. James said, " . . . if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin," (Ja. 2:9). Disciplinary action by many Baptist churches today has fallen short biblically. The warning to Thyatira should awaken soul searching (Rev. 2:18-29) - (W. W. Mosley, hereafter WWM)
Red Taping Out A Red-Light District - License for a new business was applied for in Pikeville, KY. Eugene E. King was the would-be founder of the LaFemme Erotica/Fantasy Girl Escort. (World, 2/27/98.) Rather than bluntly denying the request and facing a lawsuit by the ACLU the city commission of this eastern Kentucky town of approximately 5,000 simply set some new rules about this business. In the words of the applicant the ordinance was "so tight you couldn't run a church under it." He may be closer to right than many would care to admit. The ordinance in part: "Curfew of midnight to 8 a.m.; require escorts' hemlines to be no higher than 6 inches above the knee, necklines no lower than 4 inches below the collar bone." If this were enacted in our city not only would many businesses close but some church attendance would decline. (I Tim. 2:9) - WWM
Religious Leaders Say President Should Resign For Moral Reasons - "Richard Land, president of the SBC's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, David Gushee, ethics professor at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., and Wayne Ward, retired theology professor at Southern Seminary and a personal friend of the Clintons, have said the president should resign." (Baptist Press News, 8/26/98) One of the President's closest "spiritual" advisers, "Rev." Jesse Jackson has failed to bring up this alternative action. He certainly lacks Nathan's courage when he approached King David with, "Thou art the man!" (2 Sam. 12:7) Men that are truly prophets of God will expose and condemn sin even of rulers. Not only does sin hurt wives and children but it is against a Holy God! (Psa. 51:4) - WWM
United Methodist Church Host Homo-Catholic Mass - "Dignity" of Chicago is "A Roman Catholic, gender inclusive community celebrating the holiness of all sexual orientations and committed relationships." Broadway United Methodist Church of Chicago provides a "Roman Catholic Mass and social hour every Sunday night at 7pm, except the fourth Sunday of the month when we host a Lay Led Liturgy." Some things to ponder: what is the activity of this lay led ritual; is the Broadway United Methodist Church more liberal than the Roman Catholic; are these Roman Catholic homosexuals simply meeting with like United Methodist on their turf? Much of the lost world places all "churches" in the same classification. This is one more reason for pointing out the sin and debauchery that hides under the guise of church activity. Although the activity above is not in the schedule of most churches, it is alarming just how many events are included which have nothing to do with worshiping Almighty God. Compare church bulletins. - WWM
Cyber Patrol Misfire - One of the world's largest Internet software programs for blocking pornography and objectionable material has blocked the American Family Association Website. (Federalist, 9/1/98) The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is a charter member of Cyber patrol's oversight committee, Federalist says. The AFA openly opposes the homosexual movement. This is not the only Website that GLAAD will try to block from Christian viewers. Any organization that promotes "transgenderism" is against the Bible and holiness. (Rom. 1:24-28) - WWM
Dr. Kevorkian's Attorney In Politics - Geoffrey Fieger, Dr. Death's personal attorney, has won the Democratic nomination for Governor of Michigan. (Baptist Press, 8/10/98) Fieger has denied a report earlier this year that he referred to Jesus as "just some goofball that got nailed to the cross." However, he did admit saying, " . . . I see no reason why not to believe that in 2,000 years Elvis will be God." (The New York Times, via Baptist Press) The judgment of this would-be governor of Michigan is nothing short of blasphemy. Yet if 60-70% of Americans believe moral values matter little in high places, who will be surprised if Fieger wins? "The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted" (Psa. 12:8) - WWM
God's Latest Blessings From Lottery Winnings? - The month of August produced two lottery winners in Lubbock County, TX. A Baptist preacher from Slaton, TX bought a $3 ticket on a "whim" that "netted him $70,625." (LAJ, 8/19/98, pg. 1) The latest was an Angleton man's investment that made him the newest "Lone Star Millionaire." (LAJ, 8/29/98, pg.1) "The first thing he did was thank the Lord," said the announcer at the event. The Baptist preacher said, "It's a blessing," then named ways it would help. If winnings from gambling are a blessing from God, He certainly takes more away from others to give this blessing than the recipients receive. Of course the IRS gets their cut. Most states have stooped to gambling to fill (?) their coffers, but God certainly has not! He who has the cattle on a thousand hills and owns every beast of the forest and field does not have to fill a need of one of His children via gambling! (Psa. 50:10,11) See "Is Gambling Harmless?" (PBC, Aug. 1998, pg. 1) - WWM
Medication Used To Control Students - "Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder" may indeed be a legitimate problem for some. However, The Detroit News, 3/8/98 reports, "Some say schools turn to medication to control students." Ritalin is the drug prescribed for ADHD. The Detroit News said, "Doctors in Michigan prescribe . . . 56% more (Ritalin) than the national average." "Last year, 11.4 million Americans - mostly school-aged children - used Ritalin to help improve their concentration." Wherever prayer, the Bible, and "bustings" are outlawed, attention deficit always occurs. Reinstating the use of all three in the public schools would certainly help students to learn how to, "Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth." (Psa. 46:10) It would also help in the three "R's" area. - WWM
Catholic Conference For Homosexuals In NY - Sept. 17-20 the National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian/Gay Ministries will meet in Rochester, NY. "Rochester Bishop Matthew Clark will deliver the welcoming address . . . " (LAJ, 7/11/98 pg. 6B) Clark said opposition is a "small voice" because his ministry is "throughly and totally Gospel-based." There may indeed be a small voice of opposition on earth for this sinful activity, but the cry from the Judge of the whole earth is decidedly different. God has given them up "unto vile affection" and "over to a reprobate mind." (Rom. 1:24-28) Little more can be expected when national, state, and local officials openly accept sodomy. (Psa. 12:8) - WWM
Ecumenism At Work - The Religion Bulletin Board reported St. Luke's United Methodist Church hosted a revival Aug. 23-25. (LAJ, 8/16/98, pg. 5D) The evangelist? "Rev. Larry Brooks, pastor of Community Baptist Church" and the CBC Choir "will provide the music." Notices such as this will appear more frequently in the LAJ, especially if the ecumenical conglomerate of preachers succeed in bringing Franklin Graham to Lubbock for a city wide crusade. Much more could be said about this matter of pulpit swapping. "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" (Amos 3:3) - WWM
Shopping-center Christianity. - "Some churches are like malls, offering everything under a single roof, from `overeaters anonymous' to `joggers for Christ'. Pastors feel pressure to act like businessmen whose goal is to attract the most customers. The church cannot model the kingdom of God if it is conformed to the kingdoms of man.'" (Current Thoughts & Trends, July 1998) Current Trends & Update
Sacrificial Lamb? - "A sixth-grade bilingual education teacher in New York was fired last week after a discussion about the death of a fellow student which ended in prayer. The teacher, Mildred Rosario, told her 29 students they should leave the room if they didn't want to take part in the conversation. None left, but one later complained about the prayer. Major Rudolph Gluliani defended the firing, but House Majority Leader Dick Armey called it a clear sign that `the anti-religion animus has gone too far in America' when students cannot turn to a teacher for spiritual consolation." (World, June 27, 1998) CT&U
Global Population Nears 6 Billion. - "By the end of this century, the world will have 6 billion people, according to the Population Reference Bureau. The 20th century began with 1.6 billion people. Ninety percent of the young people between the ages of 15 and 19 live in the poor world. By the year 2010, China, India, the U.S., and Indonesia will remain the four most populous countries. Pakistan will be the fifth-largest (it is now seventh). Brazil will drop to sixth place." (Pulse, June 19, 1998) CT&U
Government Orders Church to Return Contributions. - "A Texas court has ordered Cedar Bayou Baptist Church to repay $50,000 in contributions from a bankrupt church member. Some of the money was given to the church and subsequently spent up to ten years ago; nevertheless, the church must pay the member's creditors off. Why are churches held to this standard when businesses are not? `Churches are told that in exchange for their contributions their members receive nothing that would constitute `consideration' under bankruptcy code. The contributions are therefore considered fraudulent and subject to being set aside.' (Christian Century, 4/15/98)" (What In The World, Vol. 23, Number 12) CT&U
