The Swiss And Guns.
"In Switzerland, all males are issued assault rifles for militia service
and keep them at home, yet little crime exists there. You see shooting ranges
everywhere. If there is a shooting festival in town, you will find rifles
slung on hat racks in restaurants. Tourists especially those from Japan,
where guns are banned to all but police think it's a revolution, but shooting
is the national sport, and the backbone of the national defense as well.
More per-capita firepower exists in Switzerland than in any other place
in the world, yet it is one of the safest places to be. [It] has a lower
murder and robbery rate than England, where most guns are banned."
(Current Thoughts & Trends, February 2000) The Athiestic Century.
"Back in 1900 a mere 0.2% of the inhabitants of planet earth claimed
to be atheist, agnostic, or nonreligious. By the close of the 20th century,
however, 988 million people (18.3% of the global population) said they didn't
believe in God." (Current Thoughts & Trends, February 2000) Kids Rejecting Christ after 14. "The probability of people
accepting Jesus Christ as their personal savior drops off dramatically after
age 14, a new study by the Barna Research Group has found. Data from a nationwide
representative sampling of more than 4,200 young people and adults indicate
that youth from ages five through 13 have a 32 percent probability of accepting
Christ as their savior. Young people from the ages of 14 through 18 have
a 4 percent likelihood of making that choice, while adults ages 19 and older
have a 6 percent probability of doing so. The data challenges the widely
held notion that the teen-age years are a prime time for evangelistic activity."
(Christian View of the News, February 2000) Black Household Statistics Released. WASHINGTON - Black households
are more likely than white households to be headed by a woman without a
partner living at home, and the overall black population tends to be younger,
the Census Bureau reports. Data from 1999 being released Monday show that
while married couples head 47 percent of the country's 8.4 million black
households, about 45 percent, or 3.8 million families, are led by lone women
without partners present. Of the nation's 53.1 million white households,
only 13 percent are headed by women alone. The statistics are being released
in conjunction with Black History Month, which is February. About 33 percent
of the country's 35 million blacks are age 18 or younger, compared with
24 percent of America's 193 million whites. -LAJ ELB Two Homosexual Men Rape And Kill Teenager. BENTONVILLE, Ark. -
A judge has ordered separate trials for two gay men charged with raping
and murdering a 13-year-old boy. Davis Don Carpenter, 38, and Joshua M.
Brown, 22, are charged in the Sept. 26 death of Jesse Dirkhising at their
apartment in Rogers. Prosecutors said the teen-ager was drugged, bound gagged
and repeatedly raped. Circuit Judge David Clinger decided Monday to split
the trials after Brown's lawyer said he expects the two men to accuse each
other. Carpenter's trial is set for April 10. Brown's trial won't be held
for several months because he is undergoing psychological tests. LAJ
(We live in a strange country. If two heterosexual men would sexually assault
a homosexual, it would be classed as a hate crime. Apparently homosexuals
cannot commit hate crimes according to the press and the government. Wake
up America before it is too late. ELB) Homosexuals Vandalize Two Baptist Churches. TAMPA, Fla. (BP) The
Tampa police department has advised two Southern Baptist churches to increase
their security after the churches were vandalized by homosexual activists
who also threatened to disrupt worship services, according to the pastor
of one of the targeted churches. A group calling itself the "Coalition
to Convert Baptists" claimed responsibility for the vandalism at Seminole
Heights Baptist Church and Idlewild Baptist Church. The vandals used pink
spray paint to mark the buildings with slogans and triangles. The same group
also claimed to have planted a bomb in the Seminole Heights building on
Sunday, Feb. 13. "It could have been very bad," said Greg Floyd,
Seminole Heights' pastor. "The police came and did a sweep of the building.
Fortunately, they didn't find anything and we were able to have morning
worship services." Floyd said he has had several anonymous calls from
homosexuals threatening to disrupt the church's worship services, and those
calls have prompted the Tampa police department to caution the congregations.
(If a homosexual church was vandalized, it would be called an hate crime.
When a Baptist church is vandalized by homosexuals, it is not called an
hate crime. According to the news media and the government, homosexuals
cannot commit hate crimes. These two stories hardly made a ripple in the
news. If the victims had attacked or vandalized the homosexuals, then it
would been hashed and rehashed on NBC, ABC, CBS, and CNN. Please stop the
world I want to get off! ELB)
A Pentecostal Denomination Embraces Homosexuality. "A Pentecostal
denomination founded in 1980 teaches that homosexuality is not a sin. The
National Gay Pentecostal Alliance (NGPA) claims to offer the same lively
worship and spiritual gifts found in traditional Pentecostal denominations.
But NGPA churches are made up of, though not limited to, homosexuals. The
denomination has spread to nine states and eight countries. The denomination's
web site claims it preaches `the full Bible standard of salvation, repentance,
water baptism by immersion and receiving the Holy Ghost, evidenced by speaking
in tongues'." (What In The World, Vol. 27 No. 3) "Current
Trends & Updates Bible College And Seminary For Homosexuals. "Grace Institute
Bible College and Seminary, located in Panama City, Florida, claims to be
conservative, fundamental, and evangelical. But most of its students and
faculty are homosexuals. Its founder, Jerry Stephenson, believes that `we
can be gay and lesbian and still be Christians.' Stephenson was a Southern
Baptist minister for fifteen years before he left the denomination in 1990.
In 1999 he opened the Bible college so homosexuals could openly earn degrees
in Bible studies, Christian counseling, church administration, and music."

worse, finds a study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs. The center
looked at 284 episodes of prime-time series between 1998 and 1999, as well

- A Sicilian priest was in critical condition on Friday after a church worker
put poison in the sacramental wine before Mass. Father Alfio Pappalardo,
66, collapsed behind the altar after drinking from the chalice during Mass
on Thursday night at the Basilica of Pedara. A police spokesman said the
53-year-old sacristan allegedly put an herbicide in the wine and was arrested
a few hours after the poisoning when the herbicide was found in his home.
The priest and the sacristan, who had tended the church for more than 20
years, had been involved in a bitter dispute over the sacristan's benefits.
(Obviously, this poor priest lost his power to change the element in the
cup to blood.) Paul Crouch says that Martin Luther should never have left the Roman
Catholic. The following quote shows how deeply the Charismatic movement
has become ensnared in the trap of ecumenical Catholicism. "I have
come to the conviction that Martin Luther made a mistake. He should never
have left the Roman Catholic Church. I am eradicating the word Protestant
out of my vocabulary. I am not protesting anything. It's time for Catholics
and non-Catholics to come together as one in the Spirit and one in the Lord."
Paul Crouch, Trinity Broadcasting Network (While I am a Baptist and not
a Protestant, it seems incredible that anyone could be so spiritually dead
as Paul Crouch. Martin Luther should have left the Catholic Church, but
he should have come over to all the truth, by joining with the Baptists.
Instead he started the Protestant movement which is now in the process of
returning to Mother Rome. ELB)
Bailey Smith, Former President of SBC Said: "No wonder 74
percent of Southern Baptist churches are in decline," Smith said. "Almost

are sad statistics, and there are many other Baptist churches that are not

governor Gray Davis signed three pro-homosexual bills into law October 2,
including a measure buttressing the rights of homosexual and lesbian public
school teachers. Davis selected the date to coincide with his and President

(CNV News Service March 3, 2000) Black Churches Plan To Learn From RC's - "Leaders of 27 denominations,
members of the Joint College of African-American Pentecostal Bishops"
say they can learn from the Roman Catholic Church. (Religion Today,
2/7/00) A report from the Chicago Tribune said they plan a trip to
Rome "this week" (Feb 7-12) to visit the Vatican and possibly
the pope. The bishops said it is time to recover "some of the ancient
traditions practiced by the Catholic Church." A spokesman for the Sweet
Holy Spirit Full Gospel Baptist Church in Chicago said, "...I think
we can learn from each other." Obviously these Protestant leaders have
forgotten historical records or have never read of the many Christian martyrs
left in the wake of the Mother of Harlots. They could stay at home and read
"The Trail of Blood," by J. M. Carroll and learn: (1) That a period
began around 426 A. D. called the Dark Ages, when the Lord's true church
suffer untold punishment and death; (2) That the most harsh, cruel, and
perpetual persecutions were executed by Catholics not long after the first
pope was in power; (3) That efforts were implemented to destroy what Scripture
manuscripts the persecuted possessed. These poor deceived souls who desire
a trip to the Vatican and a hearing with the pope will learn. They will
learn the things above if they have any New Testament conviction. That is
if they care to know. If this group in fact does "recover some of the
ancient traditions practiced by the Catholic Church," their false pentecostal
doctrine will not be the only thing to shun, and one of the group has "Baptist"
in their name.-(W. W. Mosley, hereafter WWM.) Catholic Bishop Helped Arrange Protestant's Trip To Rome - Cleveland
Catholic Bishop Anthony Pilla helped arrange the trip of protestant leaders
to Rome. "We are part of the body of Christ, and we want to grow closer
to other parts of the body of Christ. It's time to build some bridges and
tear down some walls," said J. Delano Ellis. (Religion Today,
2/7/00) They are getting plenty of help from Billy & Franklin Graham
in tearing down walls of separation. This is corrupt universalism to the
core. The local church holding to New Testament doctrine is the only body
of Christ taught in the Bible. To the Corinthian church: "Now ye
are the body of Christ, and members in particular." (1 Cor. 12:27)
It is little wonder the Roman Catholic Church did all in their power to
destroy the Word of God during the Dark Ages. Others have joined them in
this endeavor by producing various versions that discard the blood of Christ.
Don't join them but "...come out from among them, and be ye separate,
saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you..."
(2 Cor. 6:17) (See also Rev. 17:5,6; 18:4).-WWM Traveling Preacher A Holy Man? - The Catholic community of Hazleton,
PA believes a man clad "only in a dirty white robe" is a holy
man. (LAJ, 1/30/00) His appearance is practically identical with
the artist's idea of Christ. It is little wonder that Catholics and Protestants
fall for such deception. So do many so-called Baptist(?). One Roman Catholic
said, "I would walk through fire for him." Unless they are both
saved by the blood of Christ she will walk through fire with him. "For
there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great
signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive
the very elect." (Matt. 24:24)-WWM
Homosexual Rock Musician Draws Big Toll - Elton John has been
to Lubbock. This is not a boastful statement. I for one am ashamed that
the powers that be made such an arrangement. I am not a supporter of the
"Religion in the New Millennium" conference, but note this comparison.
"...barely 300 people showed up" at the RNM (no charge). But "14,000
whooping, hollering folks turned out to see and hear Elton John." (LAJ,
2/10/00) Some 15,000 people spent $50-plus to see and hear Elton John.
John exceeds the popularity of ecumenical religion, which is too high on
the popularity list. "Love not the world, neither the things that
are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not
in him." (1 John 2:15)-WWM Baptist Church Sign: "Our Doors Are Still Open"-This
notice appeared after University Baptist Church, Austin, TX had been ousted
from the BGC of Texas. The reason: UBC's acceptance into their membership
gays & lesbians. (Austin [AP], via LAJ,3/2/98) This church
is near UT and it is estimated that of its 200 active members 10% are gay/lesbian.
The BGCT board members who voted to exclude UBC said, "...they supported
the church's ministry to homosexuals but that its actions had moved into
affirming homosexual practice." How can a person know they are gay/lesbian
until they have experienced homosexuality? Would this church neglect disciplining
a heterosexual fornicator/adulterer or knowingly accept one into membership?
Homosexuality, fornication, and adultery are all an abomination to God.
(Lev. 20:10,13; Rom. 1:26,27; Gal. 5:19, etc.)-WWM CA's Proposition 22-Proposition 22 is a pending bill that will
soon be settled by California voters. If passed it will "block the
state from recognizing (same-sex marriages) performed in states that have
legalized" this abominable sin. (Baptist Press, 3/3/00) (God
has already settled this matter eternally. Lev. 20:12; Rom. 1:26,27) At
the present no state permits same-sex unions, but Vermont's legislature
is considering this move. Vermont's Supreme Court has already ruled that
same-sex couples are entitled to the same benefits as married couples (man
and woman). Lesbian leader Ellen DeGeneres and her depraved partner cheered
VSC's decision and said, "That does it. I'm moving there." (LAJ,
10/12/99) Vermont is welcome to her and all like her if that is the kind
they want.- WWM Pope Meets With Muslim Leader-In his "2000 Holy Year"
travels, Pope John Paul II met with the highest-ranking Muslim leader in
Egypt. (Religion Today, 2/29/00) It would be little surprise to hear
a planned meeting of the Pope with Louis Farrakhan. What a variegated religious
group is being woven together. Yet doctrinally sound Baptist pastors and
churches are ridiculed when refusing to cooperate with Catholics, Methodist,
Lutherans, Episcopalians, Liberal Baptist(?), and others to promote, participate,
and propagate the ecumenical Franklin Graham Festival.-WWM Catholic Bishop Congratulates Religious Editor-RC Bishop Placido
Rodriguez wrote thanking Lubbock A-J's religious editor for her articles
contributing "significantly to an almost tangible sense of unity with
the Christian community." (LAJ, 3/5/00) The bishop was a principal
sponsor of the "Jubilee Pledge for Charity, Justice, and Peace"
late last year. One of the contributions referred to was one "Sunday
afternoon as some key leader's of Lubbock's Protestant churches signed a
Roman Catholic `Jubilee Pledge for Charity, Justice, and Peace: Christian
Commitment for the New Millennium.'" (LAJ, 5-31-99; PBC,
6/99) Since that time Baptists, Methodists, Assembly of God, Church of Christ,
Nazarene, and others are joining ecumenical hands with Catholics to promote
the Graham Festival. The Rev. D.L. Lowrie, pastor of Lubbock's First Baptist
Church, is chairman of the pastors' committee for this festival. (PBC,
11/99) Sounds like "The Most Rev. Placido Rodriguez" (signature
on the letter) is right on target with the Pope in calling their daughters
home.-WWM
Aids Epidemic Hits Africa Hard - AIDS has become the No. 1 killer
in sub-Saharan Africa, last year claiming 2.2 million lives, 10 times the
death toll from all of Africa's civil wars (2/14 USN&WR). AIDS
is the fourth-leading cause of death worldwide. In developing countries,
it is the fastest-growing cause of adult deaths and these are projected
to increase fourfold (2/7 CT). At a Lusaka, Zambia school, half the
250 pupils are AIDS orphans.Calvary Contender (hereafter CC) Rock Artists Become Music Directors - "Per the Chicago Tribune, more

(1/00 Bapt. Bulletin). The latter more and more takes precedence
over the spiritual.-CC Catholics Like Alpha Course - The Roman Catholic hierarchy in the
USA and Great Britain is accepting, with increasing favor, the "Alpha"
evangelism course. 50 parishes in Baltimore have used its curriculum. "Alpha
for Catholics" North American coordinator said "while Alpha is
not a full presentation of the RC faith, there is hardly anything in the
14 videos that Catholics would find objectionable." Fundamentalist
Digest editor Dr. Don Jasmin notes: "Alpha is `pseudo' evangelism using
some Biblical terminology but deleting/subtly changing imperative Bible
truths regarding Salvation."-CC NRB Honors Dr. Laura, Swindoll, McPherson - National Religious Broadcasters
awards this year went to Dr. Laura Schlessinger (Jewish non-Christian),
Aimee Semple McPherson (twice-divorced, adulterous, lying woman preacher),
Chuck Swindoll (Dallas Seminary Pres.), and to Thomas Kinkade (artist).
The NRB has heavy charismatic representation, so the notorious McPherson,
founder of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, is no huge
surprise. Jack Hayford and Pat Boone are famous members of this charismatic
denomination. Wayne Pederson (v-p, Northwestern College Radio) replaces
David Clark as NRB chairman.-CC Jubilee 2000 Debt Relief For Poor Nations - The G-7 nationsbowing
to pressure from the World Council of Churches, Catholics, and other liberals
(see 8/1 CC)have agreed to write off over $50 billion in debts of
poor countries (2/7 C. Today). The U.S commitment is $970 million,
plus a large part of the 2.3 billion from the IMF's gold reserves is from
U.S. taxpayers. Forced redistribution of the wealth to Marxist dictators,
etc., will soon have all of us at the lowest common denominator.- CC NCC Favors Sending Child Back To Castro - If the 6-year-old boy is
returned to Cuba, custody will not go to his father. It will go to the state,
per a Cuban-American activist (2/5 World). He will be indoctrinated
so that he can serve the communist state and the will of Castro. His mother
gave her life to free him from wicked Castro's clutches. World accuses the
National Council of Churches of misusing Scripture, and asks it to plead
publicly with Castro to allow the boy's father to travel to a courtroom
here to resolve the custody battle. There is no such thing as a courtroom,
as we know it, in Cuba.-CC China Restricts Religion - Foundation (1-2/00) states: "Registration
of churches is vitally important to the Chinese government, for only then
can it control what is taught so as to hinder any words of protest against
the godless communist system. The communist government bases church registration
on the `three-fix' policy which requires each church to possess a TSPM-approved
pastor, a fixed meeting point and a restricted area of ministry and activity.
Yet even after a congregation becomes an official, registered church, the
government still carefully scrutinizes the activitiesand controls the `ministry'
of the pastor." Even the official churches are not free at all.-CC
Spong Is A `A-Theist' - Episcopal bishop John Spong, who retired
Jan. 29 (see 2/15 CC), says he now considers himself an "a-theist."
He rejects almost every Christian doctrine (2/7 Chr. News). He said
"I don't want a God that would go around killing people's little girls.
Neither do I want a God who would kill his own son." He said he doesn't
want to be in a church that keeps "gays" in the closet and women
out of the priesthood (1/27 Daily Record, NJ). Spong's successor
as bishop of No. New Jersey is John Croneberger. He battles quietly, but
has waged many of the same battles as Spong (1/30 Star-Ledger, NJ).
His church hosted the 1990 ordination of a "gay" priest.-CC Amy's Tragic Failed Marriage - Two families have been torn apart
against their wills, resulting from Amy Grant's and Vince Gill's divorces.
They were recently seen hugging and kissing in public at Scottsdale, AZ.
Amy, CCM/rock icon, says: "[I]f you have two people that are not thriving
healthily in a situation, I say remove the marriage. Let them heal."
(2/7 Chr. Today).-CC `Greatest Theolog' Denied Trinity - Many called Catholic priest Karl
Rahner the "greatest theologian of the century." While he claimed
to believe in the Trinity, his Trinity and his Christ is not the Trinity
and Christ of Holy Scriptures (1/31 C. News). He denied other doctrines
and did not believe that Jesus is the only way to heaven.-CC Life Action Re-Visited - The Feb. 1 CC reported a May 23-27
Heart-Cry for Revival conference in Asheville, NC. Sponsors include Life
Action Ministries and Luther Rice Seminary (SBC). Participants include "charismatic
bridge-builder" Sammy Tippit, Richard Owen Roberts (not Oral's son),
Dennis Kinlaw, and Ralph and Lou Sutera. Kinlaw (Francis Asbury Society)
was a listed speaker at the Billy Graham Training Center (The Cove) for
July 1994, May 1995, and May 1998. Sadly, Life Action pursues a new-evangelical
or ecumenical course (also see 6/1/94 CC) while seeking to promote
revival.-CC Tippit A Charismatic Who Says He Isn't - We had an article by this
title in the 10/15/94 CC which quoted from the 10/94 Charisma
concerning Evang. Sammy Tippit. He was said to have the reputation of a
bridge-builder, bringing charismatic and non-charismatic groups together,
but he shuns the charismatic label. He said he has cast out demons, had
several charismatic experiences, and has received three distinctly charismatic
gifts including healing and words of knowledge. In private, he received
the gift of tongues which he said "blessed me in my own devotion and
praise to God." Billy Graham is said to be his inspiration. Charismatic
churches have participated in his ecumenical evangelism crusades.-CC T. D. Jakes A Oneness Pentecostal? - Last year the New York Times
included T.D. Jakes in its list of the five preachers likely to succeed
Billy Graham. Jakes pastors the huge Potter's House church at Dallas. Critics
point to his flashy wardrobe, Mercedes-Benz, and $1.7 million house and
say he peddles a prosperity gospel. (2/7 Chr. Today). He has a message
about women and healing. But he has come under heavy fire for his Oneness
non-Trinitarian view of the Godhead. He revised his doctrinal statement
to sound more closely Trinitarian, but he still tries to have it both ways.
When pinned down, he says he usually baptizes in the name of the Father,
Son, and Holy Ghost, but he admits when he's with Oneness folks, he will
baptize in Jesus' name alone. Shades of hypocrisy?-CC Stott's New Book - A Christianity Today reviewer (2/7) of
John Stott's new book Evangelical Truth expressed concern that "one
looks in vain for a complementary exposition of God's revelation of himself
in Jesus Christ," and that Stott treats the Resurrection as little
more than a "validation" of the Cross. The reviewer notes Stott's
plea for unity in diversity on such things as charismatic manifestations,
the sacraments, social action, and competing eschatologies but says he does
show some resistance to the signs and wonders movement. Stott for years
has encouraged women's leadership, including ordination, in the Church of
England. Concerning hell Stott says in biblical imagery, fire's main function
is to destroy and that while the fire of hell may be eternal and unquenchable,
"it would be very odd if what is thrown into it proves indestructible."
(2/15 CC) The Bible is clear that hell is a literal place of everlasting
fiery torment.-CC
BGEA Responds To Graham's Worry That Heaven Might Be Wrong Place For
Him - Ken Holmgren of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association expressed
an understanding of concern over Dr. Graham's comments about heaven in a
recent interview with Tony Snow of Fox News [see 1/15 & 2/15 CCs].
He said: "As the transcript shows, Mr. Graham made some statements
that have resulted in misunderstanding. However, we want to assure you that
he has no doubts about his personal salvation." He said Graham's comments
were his feelings about himself, reflecting his humility. BGEA Pres. John
Corts blames chronic tiredness, personal pressures, aging, Parkinson's,
confusion, etc., and said: "Under the pressure of live media, Mr. Graham
may acknowledge something which he does not truly believe. In the crush
of that moment, he has misspoken and conveyed an idea different than his
true beliefs." Corts said media reporting is also sometimes at fault.
However, in this case, the CC editor personally saw the interview, and reported
the exact conversation from Fox News' Web site.-CC Disobedient Brother Forces Separation - Doctrinal differences necessitate
division. However, it is not those who separate who cause the division,
but those whose doctrine or behavior necessitates the separation (2/00 Frontline).
The Fundamentalist (who, by definition, practices Biblical separation) does
not cause division between believers. Divisions are caused by the brother
who does not hold to sound doctrine (e.g., separation), and the Lord requires
separation from that errant brother (2/00 Foundation). The Fundamentalist
thus is forced to choose between the fellowship of light (obey God, 1 John
1:7) and the fellowship of darkness (disobey God, Eph. 5:11). It is not
unloving for the Fundamentalist to choose light over darkness, God over
a disobedient brother. The disobedient brother by not practicing separation
(abiding in light) is the one who is unloving (1 John 2:10) and the one
who causes division. If he loved his Fundamentalist brother he would abide
in the light.-CC Second Thoughts On Abortion - Some crisis pregnancy centers have
found that when a woman thinking about abortion sees a sonogram of her unborn
child, the image frequently creates a bond and gives a troubled woman new
courage (1/22 World). Many women and their partners change their
minds about aborting their child when they see their child's image on the
sonogram screen.-CC No Sanctity Of Life - Residents of Houston found 13 discarded babies
over a period of 10 months. Three were dead (1/26 World). A Web site
for the U.S. National Institute of Health includes a notice offering aborted
baby parts for research purposes (1/00 Bapt. Banner). Big money is
to be made in selling baby body parts. This is technically illegal, but
they get around it by "donating" organs and then receiving a "site
fee." Abandoning babies, harvesting body parts, how low can we sink?-CC Godsey's Unbelief - Mercer University (SB) Pres. Kirby Godsey argues
in a book that "Jesus is not God; Jesus did not have to die;"
dismisses the virgin birth as unimportant; rejects repentance and accepting
Jesus as "the basis for salvation;" and claims that "doctrinal
soundness is arrogant theological nonsense." (1/00 Bapt. Banner).
The liberal CBF is housed in a Mercer building.-CC
